Description
The 581 is our fastest sampling rate aldehyde badge. Our traditional aldehyde collection media used in our 571 badge was inserted into the TraceAir® II configuration to allow for lower reporting limits. This monitor was designed for STEL monitoring for Glutaraldehyde, but can be used for Formaldehyde, ortho-Phthalaldehyde, and other Aldehydes. Refrigerated product. Maximum 2 days in shipping. Avoid shipping over the weekend. Store refrigerated, upon receipt. This badge is NON-RETURNABLE
Assay Technology’s 581 Aldehyde Monitor is our fastest sampling rate, lowest reporting limit aldehyde badge.
Glutaraldehyde and ortho-Phthalaldehyde STEL
The badge was designed for Glutaraldehyde and 0rtho-Phthalaldehyde STEL monitoring.
Chemical | 15 minute Reporting Limit, mg/m3 | 15 minute Reporting Limit, ppm |
Glutaraldehyde | 0.0084 | 0.0021 |
ortho-Phthalaldehyde | 0.0093 | 0.0017 |
ACGIH Ceiling for OPA
Using the 581 badge, the 15 minute reporting limit for OPA is 0.0093 mg/m3. The ACGIH Ceiling for OPA is well below that at 0.0006 mg/m3. To reach the ACGIH limit, monitor for at least 260 minutes and the reporting limit is 0.00054 mg/m3.
Formaldehyde
The 581 monitor can be used formaldehyde and the reporting limit will be lower than the 571 badge. However, the 571 badge is still the badge Assay Technology recommends for formaldehyde monitoring because the cost is less.
However, customers that are going to use the NIOSH REL to evaluate their formaldehyde results should use the 581 badge, not the 571. The NIOSH REL is 0.016 ppm, which is over 40 times below the OSHA PEL of 0.75 ppm. Because of this, the faster-sampling 581 with an 8-hour reporting limit of 0.0014 ppm is preferred.
This badge collects the following:
- Formaldehyde (formalin)
- Glutaraldehyde (Cidex)
- o-Phthalaldehyde (Cidex OPA)
- Acetaldehyde
- Benzaldehyde
- Butyraldehyde
- Crotonaldehyde
- Hexaldehyde
- Propionaldehyde
- Tolualdehyde
- Valeraldehyde
Special Notes
o-Phthalaldehyde (OPA) can not be tested with other aldehydes on the same sampler. Before sampling, ship at room temperature to arrive within 2 business days to preserve maximum shelf life. Store refrigerated. After sampling, store and ship at room temperature. Return samples to the laboratory for analysis within 28 days of sampling.Use this badge for 15-minute STEL/Ceiling limit sampling. Also, use this badge for 24-hour Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) sampling.

Note 1: The lot number format is Month/Letter/Year. So Lot 1C11 was produced in January 2011.Note 2: For each lot, Assay Technology tests a set of aldehyde monitors to assure the level of formaldehyde is within acceptance limits. A typical background level formaldehyde on the 581 badge is about 0.1 ug. For an 8 hour monitoring , that is 0.0014 ppm or about 0.2% of the PEL. The background of formaldehyde for a specific lot is subtracted from all samples tested at AT Labs.
